STARKVILLE, Miss. – No. 17 Auburn women’s tennis improved to 11-1 and earned its first SEC win of the season with a 5-1 victory over Mississippi State Friday at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
“I thought we played really well, even though the conditions were horrible,” Auburn women’s tennis head coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner said. “The girls handled the conditions well. I thought we came out fighting and aggressive. I was very proud of how we started SEC play.”
Due to frigid temperatures Friday, the match began with singles play.
Junior Jackie Kasler started off the match defeating MSU’s Petra Ferancova 6-1, 6-0 on court four.
Sophomore Jen Pfeifler earned a victory over Lien Van Geel 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 5 position for the second point. On court three, sophomore Emily Flickinger defeated Naomi Tran 6-2, 6-2.
Clinching the match for the Tigers was freshman ITA No. 70 Pleun Burgmans with a victory over Alexandra Perper 6-4, 6-4 at the top spot.
Also winning for the Tigers was senior Plamena Kurteva, who triumphed over MSU’s Roseline Dion.
Because the match was clinched in singles play, teams did not compete in doubles.
The Tigers will return to action Sunday, March 3 against No. 42 Ole Miss at 1 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
Ole Miss is 2-4 on the season and have one player ranked nationally, 39th-ranked junior Caroline Rohde-Moe. Auburn is 12-26 all-time against the Rebels.
