Matadors Advance at Big West Championships with 4-1 Victory over Pacific

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -

The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (11-12, 5-4 BWC) defeated Pacific, 4-1, Friday at the Big West Championships. The Matadors took the doubles point and then picked up three singles victories to advance to the semifinals and face Long Beach State Saturday at 3 p.m.

In doubles action, Sandra Kukla and Whitney Paluch defeated Svenja Arens and Kateryna Nezhura, 8-6, at No. 3 to take the point for the Matadors. Brooke Doane and Evgeniya Vertesheva also won at the top draw, 8-3, over Olga Gumenyuk and Jenifer Widjaja to give head coach Gary Victor and CSUN an early point.

With CSUN leading 1-0, Nina Jaworowski and Nigora Sirojiddinova rebounded from their doubles defeat to pick up Northridge;s third and fourth points and seal the victory.

Jaworowski took the deciding point for the Matadors with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Jolanta Twarowska in the second-seeded match and Sirojiddinova defeated Gumenyuk 6-4, 6-4 in the fifth draw. They had dropped an 8-4 decision to Sasha Fisher and Twarowska in the second-seeded doubles match

Doane was the first to finish in singles, defeating Arens 6-0, 6-3 in the third draw. The Tigers' lone point came at the top spot, where Vertesheva fell to Widjaja 6-3, 6-2. Paluch and Kukla did not finish their singles matches.

The Matadors advance to face the top-seeded 49ers Saturday at 3 p.m. in Indian Wells, Calif.
