2009 All-Big West Women's Tennis Team in PDF Format 

The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team placed three of its members on the All-Big West Women's Tennis Team, the conference announced Tuesday. Freshman Evgeniya Vertesheva and Brooke Doane earned All-Big West Doubles First Team honors while Vertesheva claimed All-Big West Singles First Team honors and Nina Jaworowski earned a place on the All-Big West Singles Second Team.

For Vertesheva, the two awards cap off a rookie season that saw her finish 11-12 overall and 4-6 against league opponents in singles matches, all at the No. 1 position. She posted impressive singles wins over UC Santa Barbara, Memphis, Columbia and UC Irvine during the season.

"Evgeniya was a bit shell-shocked at first at the size and power of her opponents, but around early February, she started gaining confidence and became one of the top players in the league," Matador Head Coach Gary Victorsaid.

In doubles action, Doane and Vertesheva finished the season with a sterling 19-2 record, with all the matches at the top draw. They finished a perfect 10-0 against Big West opponents, defeating Long Beach State and Pacific twice during the year. Others among their victims included Pepperdine, Cal Poly, Harvard and UC Irvine.

Doane is now 38-4 in doubles during her two seasons at Northridge and earned All-Big West Doubles Second Team honors in 2008.

"They are quite simply the best doubles team to ever play at Northridge and were clearly the best team in the Big West Conference," said Victor. "They complimented each other so well and had a maturity level off the charts for a freshman/sophomore team."

Jaworowski was the third Matador to earn recognition from the league's coaches. She finished 14-8 overall and 5-5 against league opponents, winning 10 of her final 13 matches of the season. Jaworowski wracked up noteworthy decisions over Memphis, Pacific (twice), Long Beach State, Harvard and San Francisco.

"Nina led the charge for us this season with her spirit and competitiveness," added Victor. "She made quite a jump to move from the sixth seed to the second and her effort and motivation became infectious for the entire team. I can't say enough good things about the leadership she provided as a team captain."

The Matadors finished the year with an 11-13 record and a 5-5 mark against Big West opponents.
