BEAVERTON, Ore. – Linfield’s weekend venture to the USTA/ITA Pacific Northwest Regional Championships revealed some positive signs, according to Wildcats coach Carl Swanson.

“We definitely are seeing progress,” he said. “The ITA tournament was a good team experience and important from an individual standpoint to get some matches played against quality competition.”

Eight Wildcats competed at the multi-team tournament, staged Saturday-Monday at Tualatin Hills Parks & Recreation Tennis Center.

“Our younger players picked up some good match experience and got a taste of what college competition is going to be like,” said Swanson. “Our returning players showed improvement from last season, even though that progress is not always revealed through wins and losses.”

In the opening round of the singles bracket, George Fox’s Drew Milton downed Linfield’s Luke Kleinman, 6-1, 6-0, and Matt Tesmond of Whitman defeated Joel Trousdale (Soph., Hillsboro, Ore.) 6-2, 6-2.

Micah Roos (Soph., Port Angeles, Wash.) advanced to the Round of 32 with a 6-4, 7-5, win over Pacific’s David Yanagita. Roos then was bumped off by eighth-seeded Shaun Aldrich of George Fox, 6-1, 6-3.

In addition, Zach Lyons scored a 6-3, 6-2 win over PLU’s Sam Angel in the opening round. Lyons eventually fell 6-2, 6-1, to Willamette’s Josh Wong in the Round of 32.

In the consolation portion of the tournament, Kleinman scored a victory over Luke Olsen of Pacific Lutheran, 8-1. Kleinman was eventually derailed in the second round by Whitman’s Alexander Noyes by an 8-1 count.

In other first-round consolation matches, Ben Brewer (Soph., Lake Oswego, Ore.) lost 8-5 to Puget Sound’s Lukas Edman and Trousdale dropped an 8-6 decision to Will Cooper of Willamette. Kleinman beat Luke Olsen of Pacific Lutheran 8-1 before falling 8-1 to Noyes of Whitman.

Kadin Hashimoto (Jr., Sherwood, Ore.) and Nick Konen (Fr., ) each competed in the qualifying portion of the tournament but did not advance.

In doubles action, Lyons teamed with Roos for an 8-3 result over Pacific’s Lorne Bulling and Brian Kyaw in the round of 32. The two Wildcats eventually fell 8-4 to Whitman’s Andy Riggs and Matt Tesmond. Linfield’s Tim Hawkins (Fr., ) paired with Kleinmann for an 8-6 win over Pacific’s Kolin Wong and Ty Tanaka. Hawkins and Kleinmann then lost an 8-3 decision to Whitworth’s Dew Brigham and Blake Miller.

Brewer and Trousdale teamed up in doubles play but were eliminated 8-2 in the opening round by the George Fox pairing of Peter Brown and Matt Deming.
