BEAVERTON, Ore. - Pacific opened the 2009 season in the positive direction Friday, using victories from the top three singles flights to secure a 5-4 victory over Puget Sound in Northwest Conference men's tennis action at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Cenet.

The Boxers (1-0, 1-0 NWC) got the match started by picking up two victories in doubles and nearly sweeping the flight.  The No. 2 duo of Michael Okada (So., Hilo, Hawaii) and Eric Furuya (Fr., Portland, Ore.) picked up an 8-2 decision over Andrew Timmons and Alex Harrison, while the No. 3 tandem of Nhat Nguyen (So., Salem, Ore.) and Patrick Kinghorn (So., Salem, Ore.) were 8-4 winners over Zac Peller and Scooter Sabel.

The No. 1 team of Micah Leo (Fr., Hillsboro, Ore.) and Spencer Hing (Fr., Phoenix, Ariz.) fell just short of securing the doubles sweep, dropping the tiebreaker in a close 9-8 loss to Jamie Hosmer and Nick Kelley.

Puget Sound got a jump on the Boxers in the singles, taking the lower three flights to take a 4-2 lead as the top flights took the court.  Okada started things off with an easy 6-3, 6-1 victory over Hosmer at No. 1.  Leo had an even easier time at No. 2, knocking off Peller 6-0, 6-1.  Hing secured the victory at No. 3 with a 6-3. 6-3 win over Harrison.

"The guys played very well," said Pacific Head Coach Brian Jackson.  "I was especially happy with our doubles.  This was a good team we beat today and hopefully will prep us well for Sunday's match."

Pacific returns to action on Sunday when they host George Fox at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
