SAN DIEGO – The Pepperdine women’s tennis team recorded four singles wins on day two of the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships. Ali Walters led the way with an upset victory over the No. 19 ranked player in NCAA Division I.
Walters (Newport Beach, Calif./Creekside Christian HS) opened the day blanking No. 19 (Campbell/ITA Collegiate Rankings) Alison Ramos of USC, 6-0 in the first frame. The junior Wave advanced to the Round of 16 after posting a score of 6-4 in the second set to oust the No. 3 seeded player in the singles bracket.
Walters followed that up with a 6-3 set win over Arizona’s Kim Stubbe, but lost momentum in the following sets and bowed out 6-4, 6-3.
Junior Andrea Oates (Pretoria, South Africa) tallied a pair of singles wins today in the consolation bracket, topping both Aglae VandenBergh and Deborah Castany. She is set to face Fraziska Goettsching tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. inside the Barnes Tennis Center.
Also earning a victory in consolation was Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand). She picked up a 7-6 (0), 6-1 win over Mari Tadaki.
Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista), Anamika Bhargava (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS), and Marie Zalameda (Los Angeles, Calif./Beverly Hill HS) all exited the singles main draw in the Round of 32.
The Waves look to rebound tomorrow, as action continues in the doubles main draw. No. 2 seeded Bhargava and Zalameda face UC Santa Barbara’s Jordan Dockendorf and Natalia Lozano, while Issara and Walters tangle with No. 51-ranked Jacqueline Cako and Micaela Hein of Arizona State. Both matches are scheduled for 8:30 a.m.
