Trojans Fall to 23rd-ranked Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - For the second consecutive Saturday, the Troy men's tennis ventured into Southeastern Conference territory to face a ranked opponent.  After falling to South Carolina last week, the Trojans fell to 23rd-ranked Alabama 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility.

The Trojans lone win came at number six singles when Bastain Maucher rallied from losing the second set to defeat Houssam Yassine in three sets; 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-5).  The Trojans also won a match in doubles, although Alabama captured the doubles point, when Maucher and Auerelien Tave defeated Alabama's Andrew Felsenthal and Creighton Blanchard 9-8 (7-4).

In other singles action, Branko Weber fell to Alabama's Mathieu Thibaudeau, ranked 69th in the country, in straight sets 6-3, 6-3; at number one singles.  In number two singles play, Tave fell to Alabama's Saketh Myneni 6-3, 6-2; while Alabama's Dan Buikema defeated Benjamin Chomette in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 at number three singles.

At number four singles, Alabama's Ricky Doverspike came away with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Troy's Mario Silva; while Phil Janz came up short at number five singles against Alabama's Michael Jung 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles action, Alabama's Billy Mertz and Myneni defeated Troy's Chomette and Janz, 8-0, to put the Crimson Tide in the driver's seat to win the doubles point.  The point was won when the 48th-ranked doubles team of Thibaudeau and Buikema defeated the Trojan team of Weber and SIlva at number one doubles, 8-3. 

Troy returns to action Thursday on the road against another Southeastern Conference opponent, the University of Mississippi.  The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Oxford.
