WILMINGTON, N.C. – Riding the crest of a seven-match winning streak, including wins over a pair of nationally-ranked opponents, UNC Wilmington’s streaking men’s tennis team is ranked No. 71 in this week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll.
The Seahawks, who continue their spring slate Wednesday with a 2 p.m. home match against Drake, are one of three Colonial Athletic Association teams in the Top 75 listing. VCU stands 54th and William & Mary holds down No. 61 in the rankings by the governing body of college tennis.
“Our guys have been working very hard, and I’m very happy for them,” said Mait DuBois, UNCW’s second-year coach. “They are beginning to see the pay off by receiving recognition at the national level. We’ve set many goals for this program and to be ranked among the best teams nationally was certainly one of them. We have many more goals to accomplish, and I look forward to watching this young team grow and develop.”
UNCW opened the spring season with a loss at No. 36 N.C. State before regrouping with seven straight wins, which includes victories over No. 69 Old Dominion and No. 64 UC-Irvine.
After battling Drake on Wednesday, the Seahawks take on No. 72 USC-Upstate on Thursday and Troy on Saturday in a busy week for the team.
