FT. MYERS, Fla. – University of Miami senior Victor Mauz won his quarterfinal match on Saturday to move into the semifinals of the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles Fall Invitational in Ft. Myers.

Mauz defeated Dean Tsamas of FGCU, 6-4, 6-4, to play his way into the semifinals, where he’ll face Will Neuner of FAU Sunday morning.

“Victor played a really good match today, and he’s having a good tournament so far. I’m looking forward to watching him play in the semifinals,” said Coach Mario Rincon. “Victor is starting to use all of his shots and is being aggressive; he controls his own fate when he is at the net and being aggressive. He is making better choices and his shot selection is getting better on the court.”

Henrique Tsukamoto earned Miami’s other singles win for the day, defeating John Nowak of FAU, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6). Tsukamoto will face Jose Fantova of FAU on Sunday morning. In other singles backdraw matches, Mark Schanerman lost to Juan Bolona (UCF), 6-3, 6-2, while Jack Murphy was defeated by Romain Costamagna (Barry), 6-1, 6-5.

In the doubles backdraw quarterfinals, Mauz matched up with Murphy to defeat Jordi Vives and Gabe Echeverry of FGCU, 9-8, winning the tiebreak in five. The UM duo will face off against Dean Tsamas and Dylan Gunning of FGCU tomorrow in the doubles back draw semifinals.

Schanerman and Tsukamoto were defeated by Romain Costamagna and Kevin Sielmann of Barry, 8-4, in the doubles back draw quarterfinals.

“Everyone is getting to play a lot of tennis, both in doubles and in singles here in Ft. Myers,” added Rincon. “After this weekend of tennis, we’ll be better overall as a team. We are hoping we can finish strong tomorrow, especially Victor in the semifinals and on into the finals.”
