Sunday: doubles action begins at 9 a.m. with singles at 10:30

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team advanced three players to the final four singles spots and two pairs to the doubles finals Saturday at the Balloon Fiesta Invite at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex.

Sophomore Carl Ho and freshman Jadon Phillips, who each picked up two wins on the day, will meet in the “A” singles finals while freshman Conor Berg also secured two wins to set up a meeting with NAU’s Kevin Taylor in the “B” singles finals. Both matches begin at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

In a similar set-up, Phil Anderson and Ho will face-off with Lobo duo Phillips and Ben Dunbar in the doubles finals, which begin at 9 a.m.

Thus, an individual Lobo and a Lobo pair will undoubtedly win the doubles and “A” singles championship with the potential for UNM to sweep all three.

The Lobos’ all-around dominance of the event set up a quarterfinals situation where Ho faced teammate Phil Anderson and a semifinals situation where Phillips met Ben Dunbar. The quarterfinals featured six Lobos with Ho, Berg and Phillips coming away a combined 6-0.

Ho faced off with doubles partner Anderson in the quarterfinals, securing a 6-3, 6-4 win before topping New Mexico State’s Matej Stakne 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals. Phillips and Berg also had two two-set wins. All three remain unbeaten in singles play on the weekend.

Junior Joe Wood advanced to the consolation round finals with two wins while Anderson also will play in a consolation finals match on Sunday.
