Dunbar and Ho also land on singles squad

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – University of New Mexico men’s tennis player Jadon Phillips picked up the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year honor plus landed on the All-MWC singles and doubles teams, the conference announced yesterday. Phillips is one of three Lobos to make the singles squad, joined by sophomores Ben Dunbar and Carl Ho, while sophomore Phil Anderson shares the All-MWC doubles spot with Phillips.

The 2009-10 All-Conference team and individual awards are selected by the league’s seven head coaches.

2009-10 marks the sixth time the Lobos have nabbed a trio of players on the singles squad, however, it is the first time that the contingent has been made up of entirely of underclassmen.

Phillips, a highly touted juniors player out of Macon, Ga., was the first Lobo to 20 wins this season, finishing the regular season with a 21-12 singles record (12-7 in dual play and 9-5 in the fall). He raked up a 9-4 mark at the No. 3 spot and went 5-1 in conference play. He joined Anderson to go 5-6 in spring doubles. Phillips finished with an overall doubles mark of 15-14.

This marks UNM’s third men’s tennis Freshman of the Year honoree with the last coming in 2006 when Johnny Parkes took home the hardware. Max Jones is the Lobos’ other recipient (2005). Phillips, however, is the first Lobo to also be recognized on the All-MWC singles and doubles team in the same year as picking up the Freshman of the Year honors.

Joining Phillips on the All-MWC singles squad are Dunbar and Ho, who were charged as freshman with handling the top two spots of the UNM singles lineup. Ho, from Richmond, British Columbia, compiled a 17-15 overall mark (8-11 in dual play and 9-4 in the fall). Ho, who face five nationally ranked opponents in the spring, finished 3-3 in conference singles.

Dunbar, a Nottingham, England product, finished with an even 15-15 record (9-9 in dual play and 6-6 in the fall). He opened the season 5-1 and ended up with a 5-7 record at the No. 1 position.

The Lobos’ opening match in the MWC Tournament against UNLV was postponed to 10 a.m. Thursday morning. Should the Lobos win, they will duel second-seeded San Diego State at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 30.
