Berg’s 6-4, 7-6 singles win cinches victory over Utes
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- Jadon Phillips, Carl Ho, Phillip Anderson and Conor Berg each came though with singles wins, catapulting the University of New Mexico men’s tennis team past visiting Utah Thursday afternoon at the Linda Estes Tennis Center. The Lobos are now 6-7 on the season, 1-0 in Mountain West Conference play, while Utah falls to 5-11, 0-1.
The Lobos also won the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches to claim a hotly contested doubles point. New Mexico’s No. 1 team of Phillips and Anderson nipped the duo of Utes’ Phillip Eilers and Alex Golding, 9-8, winning the tiebreaker 7-5. The Lobos’ No. 2 team of Berg and Ben Dunbar also won close, 9-7, over Utah’s Timmy Allin and Jason Smits. The Utes’ Benito Suriano and Stephen Jacobs won the No. 3 match over Ho and Joe Wood.
In singles play, it was Berg’s 6-4, 7-6 win over Jacobs in the No. 6 match that awarded New Mexico the fourth point and the team win. Ho had already gotten past Smits 7-6, 6-2 in the No. 2 match and Anderson had beat Alln in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
