No. 9 UWF Defeats NAIA No. 19 Oklahoma Christian

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The No. 9 West Florida men's tennis team (4-6, 2-1 GSC) returned to home action to defeat NAIA No. 19 Oklahoma Christian (6-8) 7-2 on Tuesday, March 17 at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Complex in Pensacola. The Argonauts earned their fourth win of the season, as they dropped only two points against the Eagles.

The Argonauts started strong in doubles, as they won all three matches. Andrey Pozhidaev (freshman/Sochi, Russia) and Kevin Ducros (freshman/Aix-en-Provence, France) defeated 8-3 Thomas Van Cauter and Florian Thies in the first spot. In the second spot, Argonauts Patrick Bateman (sophomore/Apopka, Fla.) and Luis Arboleda (senior/Medellin, Colombia) got an easy 8-1 win over Maxim Salitra and Hensen Adams from Oklahoma Christian. The third Argonaut duo formed by Nathan Rosenfeld (freshman/Miami, Fla.) and Sean Gunnels (freshman/Mobile, Ala.) won the third doubles match by defeating 8-4 Esteban Flores and Trey Baring to give the Argonauts the 3-0 lead entering the singles action.

The singles play was also dominated by West Florida, as the Argonauts only dropped two matches. Ducros was leading the first set 3-2 when he had to retire, giving Van Cauter the win. In the sixth spot, Leandro Schujmann (sophomore/Porto Alegre, Brazil) got an easy 6-2, 6-1 win over Baring. Pozhidaev defeated 6-3, 6-1 Flores in the second spot to give the Argonauts the fifth point and to secure the team victory. Oklahoma Christian earned its second point when Thies defeated No. 48 Bateman in the fourth spot. In the next two spots, Argonauts earned a 6-4, 6-4 win. Jose Ycaza (senior/Guayaquil, Ecuador) defeated Adams in the fifth spot, while Rosenfeld defeated Salitra in the fourth spot. With the four singles matches won, the Argonauts earned a 7-2 win over the Eagles.

With the win West Florida improve to a 4-6 overall record, while the Eagles drop to a 6-8 record. West Florida will next face NAIA No. 15 Berry (Ga.) (3-1) on Wednesday March 18 at 2:00 pm. For information on all UWF Athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
