No. 9 UWF Defeats GSC Rival North Alabama 8-1

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 9 West Florida men's tennis team (6-7, 3-1 GSC) picked up another win over a Gulf South Conference opponent by defeating No. 27 North Alabama 8-1 on Sunday at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex. The Argonauts earned their sixth win of the season, third over a conference rival, as they dropped only one point against the Lions.

The Argonauts started strong in doubles, as they won two out of three matches. In the third spot, Luis Arboleda (senior/Medellin, Colombia) teamed with Jose Ycaza (senior/Guayaquil, Ecuador) and earned an 8-4 win over Christoffer Sodermann and Reed Pilling. Argonauts Mike Lue (freshman/Richmond Hills, Ontario) and Sean Gunnels (freshman/Mobile, Ala.) defeated the Lions’ third duo of Carlos Cardenas and Clint Johnson with an 8-4 score. Andrey Pozhidaev (freshman/Sochi, Russia) teamed with Kevin Ducros (freshman/Aix-en-Provence, France) and fell 8-5 to Jan Minkos and Zac Bereznicki in the first spot. The Argonauts had the 2-1 lead entering the singles action.

In the singles action West Florida squad was also stronger than the Lions, as the Argos won every match in straight sets. Ducros topped Miskos 6-0, 6-1 in the first spot. Ycaza got an easy win at the sixth spot by beating Johnson 6-0. 6-4. Gunnels defeated Pilling 6-3, 6-2 to get the Argonauts’ fifth point and secure the team win over the Lions. Arboleda fell to Sodermann with a 6-1, 6-2 score in the third spot. Nathan Rosenfeld (freshman/Miami, Fla.) played in the fourth spot to defeat Cardenas 6-2, 6-4. The eighth and final team point won by the Argos was earned when Pozhidaev defeated Bereznicki with a 6-0, 7-5 score, giving the 8-1 victory to West Florida.
