Alabama Tennis Advances a Pair at Duke Fab Four Invite

CARY, N.C. – The Alabama men’s tennis team picked up four wins on Friday at the Duke Fab Four Invite, including a pair in the main singles draw and two in the back draw of doubles at the Cary Tennis Park.

The tournament began with the first two rounds of doubles play for each of the three draws. The Crimson Tide’s duo of Daniil Proskura and Carlos Taborga dropped their first match of the day to Louisville’s Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Albert Wagner, 8-4, but followed that up with an 8-4 victory of their own in the back draw against Kentucky’s Panav Jha and Anthony Rossi. Alabama’s other doubles pair, Jarryd Botha and Becker O’Shaughnessey, fell, 8-5, to N.C. State’s Dave Thomson and Sean Weber, however, the Tide tandem came back in their second match to take down Duke’s Daniel McCall and Josh Levine, 8-3.

In singles, O’Shaughnessey came back after a first-set loss to defeat Radford’s Thomas Dehaen 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, while Proskura also pulled out a three-set victory, topping North Carolina’s William Parker, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2. Botha and Taborga represented Alabama in singles as well, where Botha fell to Stiefelmeyer, 6-2, 6-2, and Taborga to McCall, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

Matches will resume Saturday with the final round of doubles followed by the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of singles.
