Williams, Two Doubles Teams Named to All-Tournament Squad
Friday, 02/19/2010

Tennessee freshman Rhyne Williams turned in an undefeated performance last week at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship and was named to the all-tournament team, the ITA announced Thursday.

Williams finished the tournament 2-0 at the No. 3 position and was the only Volunteer to reach the all-tournament team in singles. His 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over No. 118 Nick Meister clinched Tennessee’s 4-2 quarterfinal win against UCLA.

Williams, a Knoxville native, has a 22-4 record this season.

The Vols were well represented on the all-tournament team in doubles, taking two of the three positions. Senior Davey Sandgren and junior John-Patrick Smith were named the best No. 1 doubles team after posting a perfect 4-0 record. Williams and junior Boris Conkic were the top No. 2 pairing, going 3-0.

Tennessee won the doubles point in all four matches at the ITA Indoors as the Vols reached the finals for the first time since 1993. Sandgren and Smith have won all 10 matches they have played in 2010 and now have a 21-3 record this season. Williams and Conkic have won eight in a row and improved their record to 17-2.

Four of Virginia’s singles players were named to the ITA All-Tournament Team, including Michael Shabaz, who was named as the tournament’s most outstanding player while competing at the No. 1 position. The all-tournament team was voted on by the 16 tournament coaches and the ITA National Ranking Committee.
