SMITH, WILLIAMS, SANDGREN NAMED TO ITA ALL-AMERICA TEAM

For the first time in 20 years and second time in program history, three Tennessee Volunteers earned ITA All-America honors Monday with junior John-Patrick Smith leading the way with his third career award.

Smith, who finished second in the final ITA singles ranking with a 41-9 record, became the Vols’ sixth three-time All-America and has an opportunity to become Tennessee’s first four-time winner as a senior next season.

Senior Davey Sandgren earned All-America honors for the second time as he and Smith returned to the NCAA Doubles Championship and set a UT season record with 41 victories. Knoxville freshman Rhyne Williams was also named All-America in singles with a 41-7 record. He reached the round of 16 at the NCAA tournament.

The ITA also released its final rankings of the season, with Tennessee remaining second nationally in the team rankings behind NCAA champion Southern California.

Five Volunteers finished the season ranking in the top 125 in singles for the first time in program history. Smith stayed in the top five all season, ending the year at No. 2, followed by Williams (No. 30), junior Boris Conkic (No. 35), freshman Tennys Sandgren (No. 114) and senior Matt Brewer (No. 117).

Tennessee was well-represented in doubles as well. Sandgren and Smith won five of their final six matches to hold their position at No. 3. Conkic and Williams ended the year at No. 18, and Conkic and Smith, who played – and won – just five matches together, were ranked No. 20.

Back to the Future: In terms of end-year victories and rankings, it’s beginning to look a lot like 1990.

The 2010 Vols turned one of the best seasons in program history. They finished 31-2 and reached the NCAA championship for the third time, losing to Southern California 4-2 in the finals. They captured both the SEC regular-season and tournament championship with a perfect conference record, and Smith, Sandgren and Williams earned All-America honors in the process.

By comparison, the 1990 team finished 34-1 and made it to the championship match as the No. 1 seed before falling to Stanford 5-2. That year, the Vols also completed the year with a perfect 9-0 record in SEC play to seize both the regular-season and tournament championships.

All-Americas? The Vols had three award winners in 1990 as well: Doug Flach, Tim Jessup and Brice Karsh.

While the 1990 squad still holds most UT team awards, including victories, winning percentage and consecutive wins, the 2010 Vols did break the 45-year-old record for shutouts in a season. Tennessee shut out opponents 16 times during the season, including three times in the NCAA Tennis Championships.
