Smith, Williams, Sandgren named to USTA summer collegiate team
Tennessee freshmen Rhyne Williams and Tennys Sandgren were selected for the USTA Summer Collegiate Team, the national tennis governing body announced Thursday.
The two Tennessee natives were among 13 U.S. players selected to the men’s team. The women’s team has 12 members, including Caitlin Whoriskey, who recently completed her senior season with the Lady Vols.
As part of the USTA Summer Collegiate Team, Williams and Sandgren will compete in multiple USTA Pro Circuit events during the summer. The USTA is also hosting a Pro Tour Transition camp for the team members, headed by national coach David Dilucia on the clay courts in Boca Raton, Fla., from June 21-24.
Williams, from Knoxville, wrapped up one of the best freshman seasons in Tennessee history, finishing 41-7 in singles and becoming the 29th Vol to earn All-America honors. He was ranked 30th in the final ITA poll in singles and 18th in doubles with junior Boris Conkic. Playing primarily at the No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles positions for the Vols, he was named SEC Freshman of the Year and first-team All-SEC.
Sandgren, from Gallatin, joined the Vols in January and had a 21-4 singles record. He was ranked as high as No. 105 and was named second-team All-SEC after finishing 10-0 at the fourth position. He also had a team-leading 15-match winning streak, which lasted nearly the last three months of the season.
