Rhyne Williams Captures National Indoor Championship
FLUSHING, N.Y. -- Sophomore Rhyne Williams rallied from a nervous start to defeat Southern California's Steve Johnson in three sets to capture the singles title at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
In his first appearance in a national singles final, Williams bested defending champion Johnson 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 to become the first Vol to win the indoor title since Paul Annacone in 1984.
Williams lost serve two times and fell behind 0-5 to start the first set, but the roles were reversed in the second set when Williams rolled past Johnson 6-1.
Williams broke Johnson at 4-4 and held to capture the title.
"This was a great win for Rhyne," Tennessee associate head coach Chris Woodruff said. "It's not an easy tournament to win. Looking at the names of previous champions, it's a real who's who of professional tennis."
Williams improved to 12-3 to finish the fall season. Eight of those wins have come against ranked opponents.
