Lady Vols Start Home Stand With No. 7 Georgia

The University of Tennessee women's tennis team will continue its five-game home stand with its SEC home opener Saturday, March 2 at Noon vs. No. 7 Georgia at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.

The meeting between the two teams marks the earliest match played since the 2002 season when the two teams met on Feb. 8 at the National Indoor Championship. Normally, both teams round out their regular season schedule against one another.

    Tennessee vs. Georgia


    Georgia leads the all-time series with Tennessee 40-9.


    In Knoxville, the Bulldogs have a 15-4 edge, however the Lady Vols are on a two game home win-streak


    The March 2nd meeting between the two teams is the earliest the two teams have met since playing on Feb. 8, 2002 at the National Indoor Championships in Madison, Wisc.

LAST TIME OUT

    The Lady Vols played in their first home matches of the season the weekend of Feb. 15-17 against No. 54 Indiana and No. 55 Ohio State
    Tennessee picked up its first win of the year in a 4-3 thriller over Indiana Friday Night in a game that came down to No. 4 doubles.
    UT remained undefeated over Ohio State on Sunday picking up a 6-1 victory as they captured the doubles point for the second time

The Lady Vols had last weekend off prior to their SEC opener.

POLL NUMBERS

    After achieving their highest ranking as a doubles duo the week of Feb. 12 at No. 3, Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely dropped a couple of spots to No. 5 even after two more doubles wins two weekends ago.
    As a team, the Lady Vols dropped down to No. 57 after the weekend off of competition, despite two wins over ranked teams.
    On the singles side of things, Boren moved from No. 18 in the country to just outside the top-20 at No. 21. Szekely slid from No. 34 in the country to No. 43, but is currently on a three-match win streak.

THE COMPETITION

    Every dual match the Lady Vols have taken part in this season has come against a ranked opponent

    NO. 7 GEORGIA
        The match against No. 7 Georgia will mark the highest ranked opponent that the Lady Vols have faced in 2012-13
        Georgia holds a 40-9 series advantage, although the Lady Vols have won three of the last four meetings
        Georgia also has a 15-4 edge in Knoxville, but Tennessee is on a two-game home win streak over the Bulldogs
        The Bulldogs are off to a 6-1 start to the 2013 spring season dropping their lone match of the year to No. 2 UCLA at the National Indoor Championships
        They are coming off of a 4-3 win over Georgia Tech last weekend at home entering the meeting with the Lady Vols.

    GEORGIA IN THE RANKINGS
        Georgia has four singles players in the rankings, two in the top-15 and three doubles teams ranked in the top-100.
        Lauren Herring is the highest ranked Georgia player at No. 9 followed by teammate Maho Kowase at No. 15. Silvia Garcia rounds out the top-100 with her No. 97 ranking while Kate Fuller finds herself at No. 116 on the season.
        Three Bulldogs' doubles teams are ranked in the top-XX highlighted by the No. 9 team in the country of Fuller and Garcia.
        Fuller also finds herself ranked at the No. 20 spot when paired with Lauren Herring while Lily Kimbell and Kowase are ranked No. 34 in the country according to the latest poll.

NEWS AND NOTES

    Kata Szekely has won 76 career singles matches (three straight), and 87 career doubles victories. Her 87 doubles wins places her in 14th on the Lady Vol All-Time Career Doubles Wins list. Next on the list to beat are Natalie Pluskota and Olympian Manisha Malhotra who earned 88 doubles victories during their time as Lady Vols. Pluskota and Szekely earned 17 doubles victories as a tandem.
    Szekely and Boren have combined for a 25-4 doubles record this season. Since dropping their first match in dual play back on Jan. 26, the duo has won five straight to improve to a .862 winning percentage in the 2012-13 season.
    The duo has combined for three doubles tournament titles at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regionals, the Tennessee Fall Classic and the UVA Winter Invite. Szekely has also earned the singles title at the Ohio Valley Regional and the Tennessee Fall Classic while Boren earned the singles title at the UVA Winter Invite.
    Sophomore Sarah Toti has returned to action, mostly in doubles play, after tearing her ACL last season on March 25 against Arkansas. She did partake in one singles match this season at the UVA Winter Invite.
