TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - On Friday night at the Alabama Sports Complex, No. 8 Alabama defeated the No. 24 ranked University of Tennessee women's tennis team 4-2.
With the loss the Lady Vols drop to 11-9 on the season and 7-5 in the SEC while Alabama improves to 18-3 on the year and 10-2 in conference action.
The Crimson Tide got on the board first with a pair of 8-3 doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
No. 4 ranked Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely fell to No. 5 Alexa Guarachi and Mary Anne Macfarlane to snap a nine match win streak dating back to March 8. No. 84 Antonia Foehse and Maya Jansen defeated Mimi Fotopoulos and Sarah Toti playing at No. 2 doubles for the third time this year.
Alabama added to its lead in singles play as Emily Zabor defeated Toti 6-0, 6-2 to earn a 2-0 lead. The lead was cut in half however just a few minutes later when Caitlyn Williams took down No. 102 Maya Jansen 6-1, 6-4. The win was her first over a ranked opponent this season for Williams and the second of her career.
Alabama regained a two point lead as Tiffany Tavares dropped a 6-1, 6-2 match on court five but once again the Lady Vols cut it to 3-2 as No. 36 Kata Szekely upset No. 29 Mary Anne Macfarlane by a 7-5, 6-2 score.
The Crimson Tide sealed the deal on court one when Guarachi, ranked 62nd in singles upset No. 21 Boren in three sets by a 6-2, 5-7, 6-0 score.
The Lady Vols will round out the regular season in Auburn, Ala. on Sunday when they take on the Tigers beginning at 2 p.m. ET
