URBANA, Ill. - Virginia's Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.), Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) and Li Xi(Kunming, China) were eliminated Thursday (May 23) at the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships, help on the campus of the University of Illinois.
Elbaba was defeated by North Carolina's Caroline Price, 6-2, 6-1 in the singles round of 32, while No. 32 Nauta and Xi were defeated by No. 17 Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara of Pepperdine, 6-2, 6-1, in the doubles round of 32.
No. 12 Elbaba's match started at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex, but was moved indoors to Atkins Tennis Center due to inclement weather with No. 46 Price leading 6-2, 3-0.
Elbaba finished her freshman season with a 35-12 record, establishing a new UVa first-year record for most wins in a season. Elbaba, who had a 29-8 doubles mark, was also named an ITA All-American, ITA National Rookie of the Year, All-ACC and ACC Freshman of the Year.
Nauta and Xi finished the season with a 15-12 doubles record. The Virginia duo achieved a school-best finish at a major tournament, placing second at the ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Doubles Championship on Nov. 11. Nauta was also named All-ACC.
