GREENVILLE, S.C. - As they have in their previous two Southern Conference wins, the Wofford men’s tennis team swept the doubles matches and earned the doubles point en route to a 6-1 victory over The Citadel Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. The Terriers even its overall record to 9-9 and improve to 3-2 in the SoCon, while the Bulldogs fall to 8-7 overall and 1-2 in league play.
“Our team put forth a good effort today against a tough minded Citadel squad,” stated head coach Rod Ray." I am proud of how the guys took care of details and the way that they approached the match. If we had not played very hard, the match could have gone the other way.”
Scott Collins and Tinus Van Wyk got the day rolling for the Terriers as they blew past the Bulldog duo of Trip Larkin and Derek Dickey 8-2 on court No. 3. The doubles matches on court two and three were both full of intensity in which solid play carried the Terriers to the sweep.
Danny Manlow and Stuart Robertson were able to use two early breaks of serve to help hold off The Citadel pair of Yufo Sutantio and Michael Kociecki 8-6 on court No.1. The Wofford tandem of Paul Bartholomy and Alan Donald battled back from a service break down and broke serve at six all to help secure the sweep as they downed Alberto Diaz and Martin King 8-6 on court No. 2.
In singles play, Wofford never looked back as it was able to take wins on five out of six courts all in straight sets. Van Wyk wasted no time giving the Terriers a 2-0 advantage as he took down Martin King 6-3, 6-0 on court No. 4. On court number two, Danny Manlow held serve in all 11 of his service games and broke Kociecki one time in each set to take a 6-4, 7-5 victory.
After the Bulldogs took a victory on court No. 1, Collins clinched the match for the Terriers as he downed former SoCon player of the Week Alberto Diaz 7-6, 6-3. Alan Donald also used a service break in each set to down Dickey 6-3, 7-5 on court No. 5 while Bartholomy rolled past Larkin 6-1, 6-2.
The Terriers will now have a week off from match play and return to the court on April 4 as they travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take on UNCG in a noon match.
