Sophomore Daniil Proskura wins all three of his matches
ATLANTA – The Alabama men’s tennis team collected five wins on Saturday at the Georgia Tech Invitational. Sophomore Daniil Proskura led the Crimson Tide on the opening day with a pair of wins in the main singles draw as well as a win in doubles with fellow sophomore Carlos Taborga.
Proskura and Taborga’s win in doubles came by virtue of a retirement by their Lipscomb opponents in freshmen Daniel Hernandez and Stuart Tierney. The Alabama duo was leading 5-0 when play was called. Senior Vikram Reddy and freshman Stuart Kenyon also represented the Tide in doubles tallying an 8-3 loss to Armstrong Atlantic junior Matus Mydia and sophomore Pedro Scocuglia.
Proskura, the tournament’s overall No. 1 seed in singles, cruised to a pair of straight set victories advancing him to the quarterfinal round. In his first match, Proskura posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Georgia State sophomore Thomas Cook and followed that up with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Middle Tennessee State freshman Forrest Edwards. Taborga also won his opening round match, taking down Lipscomb sophomore Miguel Cortez 6-4, 6-3 before falling to Georgia State senior Juan Gutierrez 6-4, 6-0 in his second match. Reddy was edged out by Tennessee freshman Peter Nagovnak in his opening round match, 7-6(4), 6-4, while Kenyon held on for a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win over Scocuglia.
