No. 15 Boise State Falls at No. 43 Oregon, 5-2
Monday, 03/03/2014

EUGENE, Ore. - Boise State’s men’s tennis team was defeated 5-2 by the Oregon Ducks on Sunday afternoon in Eugene, Ore. It was the first loss for the Broncos since rising to No. 15 in the national polls earlier this week as they fell to the 43rd-ranked Ducks on the road. The Broncos team points came from singles victories by Andy Bettles on court one and Brendan McClain on court five. The loss ends a six week series of road trips and snaps the Broncos’ nine-match win streak as they move to 10-3 overall.

The doubles point was a battle before the home-standing Ducks pulled it out. Oregon claimed a 8-3 win over Boise State’s team of Garrett Patton and Brendan McClain at number one singles. That loss was followed by a Toby Mitchell and Nathan Sereke tie-break win 8-7 (5) on court three against Oregon’s Robin Cambier and Daniel Sardu to tie doubles at one win apiece.

The decisive match came down to court two where Andy Bettles and Thomas Tenreiro were in a battle. The Boise State duo ended up falling on a tie-break 8-7 (4) as the Ducks claimed the vital team point.

Singles started off with the Broncos pulling even in the team score when freshman sensation Brendan McClain handed Oregon’s Joey Swaysland a straight-set loss 6-2, 6-4 on court five. The Ventura, Calif., native is now 11-2 in duals and 16-6 overall in singles on the year.

Oregon regained the lead following a two-set win on court three by Daan Maasland over Boise State’s Tenreiro 6-3, 6-3. They then extended their advantage to two points and move to within one of victory when Kevin Farin downed the Broncos’ Sereke 6-3, 7-5 to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Ducks.

Andy Bettles cut Boise State’s deficit to one when he recorded a hard fought straight-set victory over Oregon’s No. 1 player Robin Cambier 6-4, 7-5 on court one. The senior improved to 6-5 in duals this spring and 17-8 overall. His victory made the team score 3-2 for Oregon meaning the Broncos would need to win the remaining two matches to get the victory.

Unfortunately, it did not go Boise State’s way as the Broncos lost the final two matches in three-set decisions. The match clincher for the Ducks came on court four where Garrett Patton fell 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 to Sardu. The final match was on court six where Mitchell rallied after dropping the first set to force a decisive third frame before falling 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 to conclude the match.

The Broncos return home for the first home match in six weeks next Sunday when the host 47th-ranked Minnesota at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club at 12 p.m. (Mountain).
