College Tennis Teams - Boise State University - Team News - Patton Inducted into USTA Intermountain Region Hall of Fame

Boise State’s head men’s tennis coach Greg Patton was inducted into the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Intermountain Region Hall of Fame in December. This is just one more of many honors that Patton has garnered throughout his career and it is the fourth hall of fame that he has been inducted into.

Patton’s career highlights are many including receiving 22 coach of the year honors during 35 years of collegiate coaching, the last 20 seasons at Boise State. This most recent honor makes Patton a member of four hall of fames: Boise State Athletics’ (2001), UC Irvine Athletics’ (2000), the Idaho Tennis Association’s (2013) and the USTA Intermountain Region’s (2015).

Patton is in his 20th season as the head coach at Boise State University and is coming off a fourth Mountain West Conference championship, the 14th at Boise State and 24th conference title overall in his distinguished career.

Boise State Opens 2016 Ranked 59th Nationally

The Boise State men’s tennis team will start the 2016 campaign ranked 59th nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in its first poll released this afternoon.

Mountain West Looking Tough in 2016

Boise State is one of five Mountain West teams listed in the first ITA rankings for 2016 released on Jan. 5.
Leading the group of five is San Diego State at No. 38, followed by No. 41 New Mexico, No. 59 Boise State, No. 67 Fresno State and No. 70 Utah State.

Boise State Represented Well in National Rankings Among the Coaches

In addition to the “General,” Greg Patton, Boise State is also represented by Bronco alumni and Patton protégés in Luke and Clancy Shields.
Clancy Shields is in his third season as the head coach at Utah State, while his older brother Luke left his position as the associate head coach at Boise State in September to take over as the head coach at Fresno State.
Boise State plays at Utah State on March 19th and will host Fresno State on April 8th.

Broncos Could Face 17 Teams Listed in First ITA National Rankings

In addition to the four Mountain West teams in the ITA rankings there are 13 other schools on the Broncos’ schedule that are among those ranked.
Boise State will face: No. 16 Virginia Tech (Jan. 30), No. 47 Indiana (Feb. 20), No. 49 Oregon (Feb. 21), No. 52 Cal Poly (March 26), No. 54 UC Santa Barbara (March 23), No. 55 San Francisco (Jan. 23) and No. 68 UC Irvine (March 3).
The Broncos could also face the following schools in tournaments: No. 5 Texas A&M (Jan. 24) at College Station, as well as the five schools in the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic (Feb. 26-27) No. 15 South Florida, No. 28 Oklahoma State, No. 34 Princeton, No. 61 Auburn and No. 65 Alabama.

Tenreiro and Mitchell Ranked Regionally for Singles

Boise State seniors Thomas Tenreiro and Toby Mitchell open the 2016 team dual season ranked in the ITA Intermountain Region for singles.
Tenreiro starts the season ranked fourth regionally, while Mitchell begins the year ranked 14th.

Two Boise State Doubles Teams Ranked Regionally

Boise State has two of its doubles teams ranked regionally to begin the 2016 team season.
Ranked fourth in the ITA Intermountain Region is the duo of Thomas Tenreiro and Lewis Roskilly, while the tandem of Kyle Butters and Toby Mitchell are sixth.

Boise State Welcomes Freshman Pedro Platzeck Cavalcante

The Broncos will have one new addition when the 2016 season begins on Jan. 16, freshman Pedro Platzeck Cavalcante (Pedro Platzeck).
Platzeck is a 5-11 freshman who is originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil, but has been living in Boca Raton, Fla., where he attended high school.
Platzeck was a singles quarterfinalist and a doubles semifinalist at the 2014 ITF Junior Panama Bowl.
He also won the 2014 ITF Junior Copa Universidad Galileo in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
A staple on the International Futures Circuit, Platzeck reached the doubles quarterfinals or better in more than 10 tournaments between 2013 and 2014.
