Cal Men's Tennis - Ricksen Cup Rescheduled
Saturday, 10/23/2010

Due to weather concerns, the Ricksen Cal Cup originally scheduled for Sunday, October 24th, has been rescheduled on Sunday, November 14th, at the Claremont Country Club. The event is a benefit for Cal Tennis and will feature a pro-am followed by lunch. For more details contact Steve Shaw at (510) 655-2438.

Cal Dominates Wilson/ITA Regionals at Stanford:

The men had a strong showing at the ITA Regionals last weekend. Every member of the 14 teams in our region played in the event with the exception of Stanford’s #1 Bradley Klahn, and Cal’s #1 Pedro Zerbini.

Bears Win Team Trophy for 3rd time in Four Years:

Every player from Cal won at least one match in singles or doubles and that helped earn the team the Team Trophy for most main draw wins in the tournament. That is the 3rd time the Bears have won the Team Trophy in the last four years.

Nick Andrews and Christoffer Konigsfeldt Earn Trip to New York City:

Without Zerbini in the lineup, there were several new Cal teams advancing through the draw. Sophomore Riki Mclachlan teamed up with Junior Sky Lovill to reach the quarter-finals, scoring a victory over #8 seed Alex Clayton and Ted Kelly of Stanford in the round of 16. Sophomore transfer Carlos Cueto and Senior Jonathan Dahan were seeded 9th in the tournament and they scored an upset over #2 seeds (ITA #13 in the country) Boutillier/Devilliers of Fresno State in the quarter-finals.

Junior Nick Andrews and Sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt (#4 seed and ITA #29 in the country) provided the biggest upset of the tournament when they dispatched #1 seed (ITA #2 in the country) Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher of Stanford in the semi-finals. In the finals, Andrews/Konigsfeldt defeated Washington’s #1 team (ITA #25 in the country) of Nedunchezhiyan/Mcmorrow to earn a trip to Flushing Meadows for the USTA/ITA National Indoors November 4th – 7th, 2010.

Konigsfeldt Shines in Singles:

Three Bears reached the round of 16 in singles. Riki Mclachlan lost a tough three-setter to eventual champion Kiryl Harbatsiuk of Sacramento State (ITA #75 in the country). Carlos Cueto continued to impress as he reached the semi-finals, defeating #1 seed (ITA #59 in the country) Ryan Thacher from Stanford in the quarter-finals. Konigsfeldt defeated #3 seed (ITA #54 in the country) Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan in the quarter-finals. Cueto lost in the semi-finals to teammate Konigsfeldt. When Konigsfeldt made it to the finals of the singles, he was about to play his 7th match in two days (due to a rained out matches on Sunday). Fatigue was clearly a factor for both players and Konigsfeldt narrowly lost in a hard fought 3 set battle with Harbatsiuk of Sacramento State.

Bears in Action at St. Mary’s:

The Cal men will have four entries in the upcoming St. Mary’s Gael Classic, October 29-31. Freshman Ben Mclachlan and Sky Lovill will join Seniors Jonathan Dahan and Bozhidar Katsarov in the three day singles and doubles event in Moraga.

GO BEARS!
