No. 22 Cal Loses, 4-2, at No. 60 SDSU
Friday, 03/06/2015

SAN DIEGO – The 22nd-ranked California Golden Bears lost, 4-2, in an upset to 60th-ranked San Diego State at the Aztec Tennis Center on Thursday.

Cal’s record is now 9-4. The Aztecs improved to 7-4.

SDSU secured the doubles point when Cal’s pair of sophomore Andre Goransson and freshman J.T. Nishimura lost, 7-5, to Thorsten Bertsch/Jonas Meinzer on court two.

The Bears could have won on court three, as Cal sophomore Filip Bergevi and junior Oskar Wikberg had tied Marko Goles-Babic and Andranik Khachatryan at 6-6 and 8-8 in the tiebreaker. But that match was abandoned when court two finished, as the Aztecs had already won on court one – with Freddy Gelbrich and Hendrik Jebens upsetting Cal’s 31st-ranked senior duo of Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton.

Cal fought back in singles to tie San Diego State, 2-2. After the Bears dropped the first singles result on court four – on which freshman Billy Griffith lost to the Aztecs’ Goles-Babic, 6-3, 6-3 – the 58th-ranked Goransson beat Gelbrich, 6-3, 6-1, on court one, and Wikberg topped Khachatryan, 7-6 (3), 6-2, on court six.

But San Diego State edged the Bears in a pair of close matches to wrap up the overall contest. On court three, Bayane took Jebens to two tiebreakers but ultimately lost, 7-6(1), 7-6(1). That snapped Bayane’s 12-match unbeaten streak. The day ended when Nishimura lost in three sets to Milen Ianakiev, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, on court five.

“Once again, doubles turned out to be a key element in today’s match,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “We certainly generated a lot of opportunities today, but we played without our usual discipline and consistency. We’re young and learning, but we definitely need to do a better job sticking to our game plan. We’ve been through this before, and a lot of it is growing pains. We’ll be a much stronger team by the end of the year.”

Cal opens play in the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship on Friday in nearby La Jolla, California. The 126th annual tournament – held at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club – ends on Sunday.
