ATLANTA – The No.16-ranked Florida State women’s tennis team suffered its fourth loss of the year to No. 32 Georgia Tech, 4-3 today at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex. The Seminoles drop to 8-4 and 1-2 in the ACC, while the Yellow Jackets moved to 6-5 and 1-2 in conference play.
"We let one slip through our hands today," head coach Jennifer Hyde said. "We had countless opportunities on a number of courts today, and in this league you have take full advantage of those opportunities to end up on top."
Florida State grabbed the doubles point with a pair of wins from courts two and three after senior Francesca Segarelli and Kristina Schleich fell on court one to Kendal Woodard and Megan Kurey, 8-3.
Sophomore Daneika Borthwick and Kerrie Cartwright controlled their match against Elizabeth Kilborne and Jasmine Minor, winning by a score of 8-2 on court two.
On court three, sophomore Mia Vriens and senior Amy Sargeant picked up their second-straight win on the court after they held off Muriel Wacker and Natasha Prokhnevska. They won 8-5 giving the Seminoles the 1-0 lead.
In singles, Schleich put the Garnet and Gold up 2-0 with a convincing victory on court six over Minor, 6-3, 6-3.
The Yellow Jackets rallied to tie the match 2-2 after recording wins on courts two and three.
Vriens (No. 118) lost to Proknevska on court two while Sargeant dropped her fifth match on the year to Woodard (No.104) on court three. Sargeant fell in a tiebreak in the first set, 7-6 (7-3) before losing a tight second, 7-5.
With the score tied, Cartwright mustered up a victory on court five against Wacker, 6-4, 7-6. The win was Cartwright’s sixth on the season.
"I was very happy for both Kerrie and Kristina down at five and six," Hyde said. "Kerrie did a great job closing out her match in two sets. Kristina has been working so hard these last few weeks, and we can see that hard work paying off. She's elevating her level of play each time she steps on court."
At this point, Borthwick and Segarelli were left on courts one and four battling out three-set matches with the Seminoles up 3-2.
Segarelli (No.72) got out to a 6-4 first set win over Kurey. However, Segarelli could not hold of a recharged opponent in the second and third as she fell by a final score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, tying the score 3-3.
Borthwick (No.37) got out in front 6-4 in the first set over Kilborn (No.52), however Kilborn came back to take the second, 6-4. In the decisive third set, Borthwick worked out of a 2-3 hole to tie the set 3-3. Each player went on to hold their serves, but Kilborn found her break to go up 5-4 before serving out for the match. Borthwick fell in a tough 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 decision.
"This one stings," Hyde said. " I'm interested to see how his team responds to today's loss. We have got to come back on Wednesday against UNLV and make a statement about the kind of team we want to be this year. It's a long season, and we have already had a number of challenges."
