ORLANDO, Fla. - The Florida State women's tennis team took advantage of Saturday's singles consolation draw and came away with three singles wins in the USTA Clay Court Invitational at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Kerrie Cartwright started off the day with a great win in three sets over Vanderbilt's Ashleigh Antal. The junior narrowly dropped the first set, 4-6, but came back to earn the split with a 6-4 second. Cartwright then put away her opponent 10-3 in the tie breaker to earn her second win of the weekend.
"Kerrie did a great job today of hanging in there during her match," said head coach Jennifer Hyde. "She didn't play her best tennis in the first two sets, but her third set was perfectly executed. She found a way to get the win and she did a tremendous job of closing out her match."
Freshman Duda dos Santos earned an impressive three-set victory over Maria Alvarez of Oklahoma State. It was a tough, back-and-forth match, and dos Santos prevailed 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5).
"Duda had a very tight 6-4, 7-5, 1-0 match today," added Hyde.
Mia Vriens picked up where she left off on Thursday and posted another victory. This time, the junior from Sydney, Australia took down Texas Tech's Samantha Czarniak, 6-2, 6-3. Laurence Porry played hard in her singles consolation match, but was unable to hold off a tough USTA junior player by the score of 6-0, 6-4.
"Mia is getting herself back to form and continues to get better with each challenge she has. We are very excited about what is ahead for her spring season," said Hyde.
Porry and dos Santos took to the court in the afternoon for their quarterfinal doubles match, but were not enough for the No. 1-seed pairing of Stancu and Hristov (TAMU), losing 8-1.
The end of the USTA Clay Court Invitational wraps up the 2013 fall season for the Florida State women's tennis team. All seven student-athletes recorded multiple singles wins in fall competition, with Cartwright and Daneika Borthwick leading the way with eight and five, respectively. The pairings for doubles were often shuffled around, but the groupings of Borthwick and Cartwright, along with Porry and dos Santos, were each able to record multiple wins this fall.
"It is hard to believe that our fall season is already winding down, as it feels like we just got going," Hyde said. "This fall has been full of excitement and changes in the program. We have had opportunities to see where we are as a team, where we need to improve and where we need to build from as we head into the spring season."
The `Noles will next take to the court in competition on Jan. 19, 2014, in a pair of matches against Stetson at 9:30 a.m. and UAB in the afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
