BLACKSBURGH, VA. – The No.32-ranked Florida State women’s tennis team closed out the regular season today with a victory over Virginia Tech, 4-1. With the win the Seminoles improve to 13-8 (5-6 ACC) for the season.
In doubles, the Seminoles were only able to win one of the three matches in play. On court three, Kerrie Cartwright and Kristina Schleich defeated Emily Lauten and Isel Martinez Marcons, 8-5.
On court one, Daneika Borthwick and Francesca Segarelli fell to Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford, 8-4 just before Amy Sargeant and Mia Vriens dropped their match to Carol Kahoun and Raluca Mita on court two 8-6.
“We came out flat in doubles today,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “Which is uncharacteristic of us. We went down 1-0, but I was very impressed with how the ladies responded.”
Moving on to singles, the Seminoles were able to steal the momentum from the Hokies after taking five-of-six first set wins.
“The girls took control of the match right from the start of singles,” Hyde said. “The focus and intensity was there. We knew that we had to take advantage of the opportunity to get better and I think we did that even though we split the weekend.”
Vriens quickly erased the 1-0 deficit as she dominated her match on court three against Martinez-Marcos 6-0, 6-3.
“Mia showed some guts today,” Hyde said. “She played through some adversity today and was able to get off court quickly.”
Winning her 11th match on the year was Cartwright from court five, as she took care of business against Kahoun, 6-1, 6-4.
Putting the ‘Noles up 3-1 was Borthwick from court one. Borthwick controlled her match against Stoica, winning by a score of 6-3, 6-3.
Schleich delivered the clinching point for Florida State from court six as she defeated Ivanovic, 6-4, 6-3.
“Kristina is also playing through some adversity,” Hyde said. “It’s good to see that kind of fight from her as she was able to clinch the match for us.”
The match was stopped after FSU had claimed victory, leaving a pair of matches left unfinished.
After cruising to a 6-2 win in the first set, Segarelli fell 6-4 in the second before getting out to a 1-0 lead in the third on court two. Sargeant went down 6-1 in the first before charging back to take the second 6-3.
Florida State will learn its seed for the 2013 ACC Championships after Boston College plays North Carolina tomorrow at 1 p.m. Regardless of the outcome, the Seminoles will begin tournament play on April 25 in Cary, N.C.
“We’ve got to rest up,” Hyde said. “We’ve got to get them ready for what is going to be a very wide-open and very exciting ACC Championships.”
