NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington men’s tennis freshman Francisco Dias was named Atlantic 10 Rookie Performer of the Week on Monday after going undefeated in two matches this past weekend. It marks the second time in three weeks that Dias earned the weekly honor, as he was tabbed Rookie Performer of the Week on Jan. 30.
Dias went undefeated in both singles and doubles play in matches against Columbia and St. John’s, including a win over a nationally ranked Red Storm opponent.
Dias opened the weekend on Friday with a No. 1 singles victory, nearly blanking Winston Lin of Columbia by set scores of 6-0, 6-4. Dias and senior Ugur Atalay then teamed up to win their No. 2 doubles flight over the Lions’ John Yetimoglu and Nathaniel Gery, 9-8 (10-2).
On Saturday, Dias earned an impressive No. 1 singles victory over Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) ranked No. 29 Vasko Mladenov of St. John’s, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). The duo of Dias and Atalay followed with a No. 1 doubles victory over the Red Storm’s Stefan Bojic and Ilija Vucic by an 8-5 score.
Dias, who is ranked No. 12 in the ITA Atlantic Region, has amassed a No. 1 singles record of 7-2, a No. 1 doubles record of 2-0 and a No. 2 doubles record of 3-3 this season.
GW (3-6) returns to action on Saturday, March 3 with a 1 p.m. match at UNC-Wilmington.
