GW Upsets No. 73 Radford, 4-3, on Senior Day
Monday, 04/09/2012

WASHINGTON – Ugur Atalay closed out his Senior Day match in perfect fashion on Sunday afternoon as he won a three-set battle at No. 2 singles to lift the George Washington men’s tennis team over No. 73 Radford at the GW Tennis Center on the Mount Vernon Campus.

The Colonials (13-7) and the Highlanders (16-5) each had three points through doubles play and five singles matches, when Atalay rolled past Igor Ogrizek, 6-1, in the third and final set to clinch the match. The regular-season finale win marks the first over nationally ranked Radford in sixth-year head coach Greg Munoz’s tenure.

“This was a perfect senior day,” Munoz said. “I am so happy that Ugur and Richard won their final matches on our home court. This is an incredible win over Radford.”

Freshman Francisco Dias – who is ranked No. 100 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association – earned a thrilling three-set No. 1 singles victory over No. 78 Nick Sayer in a battle of nationally ranked opponents. Dias won the first set, 6-4, and stumbled in the second, 4-6, but the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie Performer of the Week earned a commanding 6-2 win in the third set to take the match.

Atalay opened his No. 2 contest with a 7-6 win in set one and was edged in the second, 4-6. He ultimately won the flight with a 6-1 third set for his final career match at home. Classmate Richard Blumenfeld downed Radford’s Patrick O’Keefe, 7-6, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot to close out his career.

In the No. 3 match, junior Alexander van Gils fell to Stijn Meulemans, 6-4, 6-4, and junior Leonardo Lapentti dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Thomas Dehaen at the No. 4 spot. Sophomore Ulrik Thomsen was edged by Joe Mills by set scores of 7-6, 6-4, in the No. 5 match.

GW clinched the doubles point with two-of-three match victories. At the No. 1 spot, Atalay and Dias defeated Dehaen and Sayer in a tiebreaker, 9-8. Thomsen and van Gils teamed up for an 8-4 win over Meulemans and Ogrizek in the No. 2 match, while Lapentti and sophomore Viktor Svensson fell to Mills and O’Keefe, 8-3, in the third flight.

The reigning Atlantic 10 champions head to Mason, Ohio, for the conference tournament, which will run from Friday, April 13 – Sunday, April 15 at the Linder Family Tennis Center.
