GW's Francisco Dias Named A-10 Men's Tennis Rookie Performer of the Week
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington men’s tennis freshman Francisco Dias was named Atlantic 10 Rookie Performer of the Week on Monday after going undefeated in three straight matches this past weekend at the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles positions.
The award marks the third weekly honor for the Lisbon, Portugal, native, who was also tabbed Rookie Performer of the Week on Jan. 30 and Feb. 13. Dias, who is currently riding a six-match winning streak at No. 1 singles, is ranked No. 100 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll.
The freshman standout opened the weekend on Friday with a straight-set win over Richmond’s Ethan Dunbar by scores of 6-3, 6-4. In back-to-back matches on Saturday, Dias took down Jack Williams of Charlotte, 6-3, 6-4, before defeating Fordham’s Kuba Kowalski, 6-3, 6-1.
Dias and first-flight doubles partner senior Ugur Atalay extended their five-match winning streak this weekend when they defeated Richmond, 8-3, on Friday. The tandem then downed Charlotte, 9-7, and Fordham, 8-5, on Saturday.
Dias and GW return to the court on Friday, April 6, with a match at James Madison before returning home to host Radford on Sunday, April 8, for the Colonials’ Senior Day.
