Tuesday, 03/20/2012

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - After posting an unbeaten mark at the No. 2 singles position and leading the George Washington men's tennis team to a perfect 4-0 Spring Break trip, senior Ugur Atalay was named Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week on Monday.

The award marks the second conference honor for the Istanbul, Turkey, native, who was named Co-Atlantic 10 Rookie Performer of the Week in 2009.

Atalay defeated all of his No. 2 singles opponents as the Colonials competed in matches against Florida Atlantic, Troy, Campbell and East Carolina as part of their Spring Break trip. Atalay and No. 1 doubles partner freshmanFrancisco Dias went 2-2 over the week, defeating their opponents from both Troy and Campbell.

The senior standout owns an overall record of 7-2 in second flight singles, and is currently tied with junior Leonardo Lapentti with a team-high five-match winning streak dating back to Feb. 12 against St. John's.

GW (7-6) hosts three straight matches at Mount Vernon Tennis Center this weekend, beginning with a 12:30 p.m. match with District rival Georgetown on Friday.
