ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The George Washington men’s tennis team extended its Spring Break winning streak to 5-0 after defeating Navy, 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon at USNA Tennis Courts.

The Colonials (8-6) swept the doubles matches and posted a 5-1 singles mark en route to victory. Senior Ugur Atalay extended his winning streak to a team-high six matches with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 2 singles spot.

“This win was a complete team effort,” said head coach Greg Munoz. “Navy is a very good team and today’s match could have gone either way. We were put to the test and we succeeded.”

GW opened the match with a 3-0 mark in doubles play. The No. 1 duo of freshman Francisco Dias and Atalay defeated Navy’s Calvin Mark and Peter McDonald, 8-3.

In the No. 2 match sophomore Ulrik Thomsen and junior Alexander van Gils downed Chris Kenney and Marcus Rebersak, 8-2, and junior Leonardo Lapentti and sophomore Viktor Svensson defeated Blake Daniel and Nicholas Gutsche, 8-5, in the No. 3 spot.

Dias – who is ranked No. 80 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll – earned a No. 1 singles victory over Rebersak by set scores of 7-5, 6-1. Lapentti defeated Daniel, 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 4 slot, and Svensson nearly blanked Gutsche, 6-1, 6-1.

Freshman Mike Kachkar earned a No. 6 win over Tyler Burnett by set scores of 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). Senior Richard Blumenfeld dropped his No. 3 match to McDonald, 6-3, 6-2.

GW hosts cross-town rival Georgetown in its home opener on Friday, March 23 at 12:30 p.m. to kick off a six-match home stand. The Colonials welcome Division II UDC on Saturday, March 24 and Atlantic 10 foe Duquesne on Sunday, March 25.
