GW's Atalay Lands Second Straight A-10 Men's Tennis Weekly Honor
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – After going undefeated in singles and doubles play against Navy and District rivalGeorgetown, senior Ugur Atalay was named Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Performer of the Week for the second straight week on Monday.
The award marks the third conference honor for the senior standout, who earned his first Performer of the Week accolade a week ago and was a Co-Rookie of the Week selection in 2009.
Atalay, who is unbeaten in seven straight singles matches, posted a pair of victories at both No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles play to help GW (9-6) extend its six-match winning streak.
The Istanbul, Turkey, native opened the week with a second-flight singles victory over Navy’s Calvin Mark by set scores of 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. He then teamed up with freshman Francisco Dias in the No. 1 doubles spot to down Midshipmen Mark and Peter McDonald.
In the Colonials’ home opener on Friday, Atalay downed Georgetown’s Charlie Caris, 6-2, 7-5. He and Dias then earned an 8-4 decision over the Hoyas’ Andrew Bruhn and Brian Ward.
Atalay and the Colonials continue their four-match home stand when GW hosts conference foe Richmond on Friday, March 30 at 1 p.m.
