WASHINGTON – The George Washington men’s tennis team extended its winning streak to seven matches after earning a 5-2 decision over Atlantic 10 foe Richmond on Friday at the GW Tennis Center.
Senior Ugur Atalay – the reigning A-10 Performer of the Week – now owns an eight-match singles winning streak, while junior Alexander van Gils has won six straight singles matches.
The Colonials (10-6, 2-1 A-10) earned the doubles point with Nos. 1 and 2 match victories. The duo of Atalay and freshman Francisco Dias downed the Spiders’ Sebastien Fauchet and Jesse Feder, 8-3, and sophomore Ulrik Thomsen and van Gils teamed up for an 8-2 second-flight victory over Dylan Trent and Aaron Wicker. Senior Richard Blumenfeld and freshman Mike Kachkar dropped a tight 8-7 match to Dunbar and Paul Nahon in the No. 3 spot.
Dias – who is ranked No. 100 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association Poll – opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Dunbar at No. 1. Despite dropping the first set to Fauchet, 3-6, Atalay powered back with set scores of 6-4, 7-5, to earn the victory in the No. 2 match.
