Liberty Cruises Past Pirates, 7-0

Alexandra Sheeran posted No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles victories, Saturday.

The Liberty women's tennis team cruised through its Saturday contest against Hampton, downing the Pirates, 7-0, at the Hershey Tennis Courts.

Liberty wins for the fourth time in five contests, to up its record to 5-10.  Hampton drops to 3-6 with the loss.

The homestanding Lady Flames swept through doubles play, taking each match commandingly.  Cameron Richard and Brittany Yang blanked Melanie Scott and Tabita Daolio, 8-0 in the lead match.  Nicola Wellman and Alexandra Sheeran earned the win in the No. 2 slot, 8-2, over Barenese Myers and Maria Ycaza.  Finally, Carol Lobel and Jessie Boda took down Calisia Reid and Danielle Butler, 8-1, in the No. 3 contest.

Just as swiftly as Liberty won the doubles point, they claimed each of the six singles contests in straight sets.

Sophomores Sheeran and Richard led strong in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches winning with scores of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-1, respectively.  Sheeran downed Reid, while Richard outhit Myers.

Head Coach Chris Johnson featured a pair of freshmen in the middle of the lineup, as Yang and Wellman added two more team points for Liberty.  Yang defeated Ycaza, 6-0, 6-4, while Wellman downed Butler, 6-2, 6-0.

In the final two slots, Lobel knocked off Daolio, 6-2, 6-0, while Annisha Domenech defeated Renee Henry, 6-0, 6-2.

Liberty has a week away from competition, with its next matchup taking place on March 25 against Presbyterian College.  The Big South matchup is slated for a 1 p.m. start in Clinton, S.C.
