Huskers Sail Past Pirates

VENTURA, Calif. – The No. 55 Nebraska Cornhuskers started out their three-game road trip on the right foot with a 9-0 victory over the Ventura College Pirates on Friday afternoon. The winimproves the Huskers to 7-5 on the year.

The Huskers started out sweeping all three doubles matches and picking up the first three points of the match.

On court No. 1, NU’s duo of Robert Schulze and Eric Sock downed VC’s team of Dylan Cleary and Cameron Lee, 8-2. Nebraska’s squad of Benedikt Lindheim and Andre Stenger teamed up on court No. 2 to down the Pirates’ Jonathan Lin and Paulo Fernandes, 8-2. Nebraska’s team of Christopher Aumueller and Stefan Gollner were victorious over VC’s Tyler Sperry and Nick Bezzubchenko, 8-5.

The Huskers kept their doubles momentum going into singles play where they swept all six singles matches.

Playing at the No. 1 spot in the Huskers’ lineup was Lindheim who downed VC’s Lin in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. On court No. 2, NU’s Stenger was victorious over the Pirates Cleary, 6-1, 6-1. Playing at the No. 3 spot for the Huskers was Gollner, who was victorious over Verntura College’s Lee, 7-6, 6-1.

Nebraska’s head coach Kerry McDermott was happy with bottom half of the lineup today as they went 3-0 in singles play.

Playing at the No. 4 spot for the Huskers was Sock, who was victorious over VC’s Fernandes in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. NU’s Tom Blackwell was on court No. 5 when he downed Ventura College’s 6-3, 6-4. Winning the ninth and final point for the Huskers was Drew Freeman, who downed VC’s Sperry in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.

“I’m glad we were able to get the match in because there was a chance of rain,” McDermott said. “They’re a good team. It was a good match and we played a pretty talented junior college school out of Southern California. I felt our guys improved today especially at he bottom of the lineup. I think it’s going to help us down the road.”

The Huskers will take on No. 53 Cal Poly on Sunday, March 18, in San Luis Obispo, Calif. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
