RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State women's tennis team notched its first ACC win of the season with a 5-2 victory over No. 71 Boston College on Saturday, March 21, in Raleigh, N.C. at the JW Isenhour Tennis Center. The Pack won the doubles point and then four singles matches, two in straight sets, to earn the victory. NC State is now 4-9 (1-2 ACC) on the season, and the Eagles fall to 6-6 (2-3 ACC).
The Pack started the match with an early lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. Junior Daria Petrovic and freshman Diana Mortlock paired up and defeated Alina Sullivan and Katarina Gajic, 8-5, at No. 2. Senior Neils Barringer and freshman Pender Sessoms fell to Katharine Attwell and Lana Krasnopolsky, 8-3, at No. 3, to leave the deciding point up to the No. 1 doubles team.
The No. 45 tandem of junior Berkeley Brock and sophomore Lenka Hojckova stayed even with Lauren Cash and Dasha Cherkasov through most of the match, but pulled away in the end to earn the 8-5 victory at the No. 1 slot.
Sullivan defeated Sessoms, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6 to start off the singles portion of the match. Mortlock dominated Brittany Delaney, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5, and Petrovic fell to Gajic, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3.
Brock earned a close win in the first set, but then controlled Cash in the second to earn the 7-5, 6-1, win at No. 2.
Barringer secured the win for the Pack after coming from behind to split the first two sets and send her singles contest into a third. Barringer and Attwell stayed even throughout the final set, sending it to 6-6, with a tie-break determining the winner of the match. Barringer controlled the tie-break, emerging with the 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(3) win at No. 4, and securing the Pack's first conference win of the season.
Hojckova capped off NC State's victory with a third set, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1, win over Krasnopolsky, at No. 1.
The Pack will face Maryland on Sunday, March 22 in Raleigh. The match will begin at 1 p.m.
