Texas State Splits A Pair Of Tennis Matches Against Lamar and McNeese State

San Marcos, Texas- The Texas State women's tennis team improved its 2009 season record to 5-4 when the Bobcats split a pair of Southland Conference matches at the Bobcat Tennis Center.

 

Texas State began the weekend with a hard-fought match against Lamar as the Bobcats won two of the three doubles matches for a point and a pair of single matches before falling 4-3 against the Cardinals.

 

In doubles play, Texas State won the top doubles match as Andrea Giraldo and Lainy Chafitz teamed to beat Mariaryeni Gutierrez and Mariantonieta Gutierrez, 8-3.

 

Texas State also won the number three doubles matchup when Saskia Kruse and Mackenzie defeated Manami Kuroda and Salina Aranda 8-4.  The Bobcats suffered their only loss in doubles play when Ashley Ellis and Nyssa Peele were edged 8-5 by Carla Nava and Manijee Ashrafi.

                                                               

In singles play, Lamar won the top four matches as Mariaryeni Gutierrez edged Giraldo 6-3, 6-4 and Mariantonieta Gutierrez won a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Ellis. Ashrafi also beat Chafitz 6-3, 6-0 in the number four matchup, while Nava prevailed over Peele, 6-4 and 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreaker.

 

Kruse defeated Kuroda 6-1, 6-1 in the number five singles match and Farmer defeated Aranda in three sets 2-6, 6-4 and 6-2.

 

Texas State Bounces Back Against McNeese State

 

Texas State bounced back from the hard-fought loss to dominate their match against McNeese State when the Bobcats posted a 6-1 victory over the Cowgirls on Sunday.

 

The Bobcats opened the day winning all three doubles matches. In the number one match, Andrea Giraldo and Lainy Chafitz defeated Vicki Martinez and Ralitsa Pridopska 8-2. In the number two matchup,  Ashley Ellis and Nyssa Peele edged Petra Gudelj and Rocio Frausto 7-6, while Saskia Kruse and Mackenzie Farmer beat Inga Efimenko and Tea Tvrtkovic 8-4.

 

In singles action, the Bobcats won five of the six matches as Giraldo defeated Pridopska 6-2, 6-3 in the number one match. Ellis won the number two match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Vicky Martinez, Lainy Chafitz beat Tea Tvrtkovic 6-1, 6-3 in the number four matchup and Mackenzie Farmer edged Inga Efimenko 4-6, 6-3 and 10-8. Saskia Kruse also won her fifth straight singles match 6-0, 6-3 over Rocio Frausto in the number five singles match.

 

Petra Gudelj scored McNeese State’s only team point in the match as she edged Nyssa Peele 7-6, 6-4.

 

Texas State returns to action on Thursday, March 14 at noon when the Bobcats play host to UT-Arlington in a Southland Conference match at the Bobcat Tennis Center.
