Men's Tennis to Play Michigan in First Round of ITA Kick-Off Weekend
Thursday, 06/16/2011

Red Raiders will play in Austin for first and second rounds of the 2012 ITA Kick-Off Weekend

LUBBOCK, Texas – The 2011 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kick-Off Weekend Draft took place on Wed., June 8, for schools participating in the 2012 Kick-Off Weekend in January. The highest ranked Division I teams that are not a host site, selected which of the 15 sites they wished to play at and filled all 60 spots available.

The teams that finished ranked in the top 15 at the end of the prior season are given the option to host first and second rounds. If a team opts not to compete in the Kick-Off Weekend, then the next highest ranked team takes its spot as host.

The Texas Tech men’s tennis team ended the 2011 season ranked 21st in the country and will go to Austin, Texas, to play No. 34 Michigan in the first round on Jan. 29, while No. 16 Texas and No. 39 Maryland will also meet first round action. On Jan. 30, the consolation and championship matches will take place.

“We are looking forward to playing a very tough Michigan team,” said head coach Tim Siegel. “Their top two players are as good as anyone.”

The No. 1 team in each site will face the No. 4 team. The No. 2 team will play the No. 3 team. Two matches are guaranteed – the winners/losers will play the following days. The 15 schools that win both of their matches at these events will be invited to play in the Feb. 17-20 ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va., hosted by the University of Virginia.
