Monday, 02/25/2013

LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 29 Texas Tech concluded the first day of the season with a 7-0 win over Prairie View A&M on Wednesday at the McLeod Tennis Center.

"I liked the way we battled today," said head coach Tim Siegel. "This was a good opportunity to see where we stand and get a feel for the lineup."

Jeff Bryan and Raphael Pfister cruised a straight set win at No. 1 doubles, Gabriel Wanderley and Hugo Dojas blacked Jackson Varney and Trenton Johnson at No. 2 doubles. Freshmen Evan Nix and Felipe Soares then closed out the point with an 8-1 win at No. 3.

Vitor Manzini avenged an earlier loss in the day by way of a 6-2, 6-0 win over Prairie View's Craig Wiltz. He was followed by straight set victories from Gabriel Dias, Dojas, Francisco Zambon, Pfister and Soares.

Texas Tech returns to the courts in Houston, as the Red Raiders face No. 55 Rice on Saturday at 1 p.m. and No. 11 Mississippi State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
