The UTEP tennis team sent its three seniors out in style by dismantling UAB, 6-1, at the El Paso Tennis Club Sunday afternoon. Weronika Bloczynska, Vicky Michaud and Megan Pritchard, the winningest class in program history, were honored in a pre-match ceremony.

The Miners are now 15-6 on the campaign, and conclude the home portion of their slate with a program-best 10 triumphs (10-1). Additionally, UTEP will have a chance to equal the 1995 team for most overall wins in a single season when it battles I-10 rival New Mexico State in Las Cruces at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

“It is a great accomplishment by the seniors (being winningest class), and one that nobody can take away from them,” head coach Jamie Campbell said. “We are on the verge of tying for the most wins ever by a UTEP team, but will continue to just take it one match at a time.”

UTEP jumped all over the Blazers (5-8) early on, picking up victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles while earning a triumph via a forfeit on No. 3 to take the 1-0 advantage.

Bloczynska/Pritchard  crushed Jenny Cape/Giogia Romero, 8-1, at the top spot, while Ximena Fuentes/Marina DeLuca hammered Paula Alvarez/Brittany DeFelice by the identical score at No. 2 doubles.

Pritchard has now been a part of 21 doubles wins this year, putting her one shy of matching the school record for a single season.

Following a quick break, action switched to singles play where everything continued to fall in favor of the Orange and Blue.  UTEP secured wins at No. 1, 3, 4 & 5, while Fuentes picked up a victory by virtue of default at No. 6.

Carolina DeLuca made quick work of DeFelice at No. 3 singles, dispatching her foe in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Bloczynska and Romero squared off at No. 1 singles, and the native of Poland took control early by snagging the first set, 6-1. Romero evened the match on the strength of a 6-4 count in the second set. With the team outcome already in the books, a super tie breaker was used. It was all square through 12 points (6-6) before Bloczynska elevated her level en route to an 10-7 win.

Pritchard continued her strong play by downing Ceylan Engin, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 5 singles. Marina DeLuca claimed a competitive match against Cape, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 4 singles.

Martina Trierweiler squared off against Alvarez at No. 2 singles, and fell in the opening set 7-6. With the Miners in control, Trierweiler retired in order to prevent further alienating an injury.
