PENSACOLA, Fla. – In the season-opening match for both teams, the West Florida women’s tennis team (1-0, 1-0 GSC) blanked Gulf South Conference rival West Alabama (0-1, 0-1 GSC) 9-0 at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex on Tuesday.  The No. 6 Argonauts did not drop a match, as two individuals and one doubles team won in straight sets.

In doubles action, UWF dropped just three games combined in the three matches.  In the first spot, the No. 24 doubles team of Argonauts Suzanna Cavalcante (senior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Paulina Ojeda (sophomore/Santiago, Chile) defeated Nichole Shanahan and Brittany Williams 8-2. In the second spot Renata Mattos (senior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Taylor Brewster (sophomore/Ontaro, Canada) defeated Mariana Freitas and Victoria Jones 8-1. Making their debut as Argonauts, Caitlyn Baines (freshman/Panama City Beach, Fla.) and Cammie Gray (freshman/Shalimar, Fla.) did not drop a game against Cori Waters and Amanda Morgan, to give the 3-0 lead to the Argonauts.

Playing in the first spot in singles, No. 2 Cavalcante defeated Shanahan 6-4, 6-2. In the second spot, Ojeda beat Jones with a 6-2, 6-4 score. Brewster played in the third position and defeated Freitas 6-2, 6-3. In the fourth singles spot, Caitlyn Baines easily dispatched Williams with a 6-1, 6-2 score. After not dropping a game in doubles, Gray repeated her performance in the fifth singles spot by defeating Waters 6-0, 6-0. Also making her debut as an Argonaut, Naomi Higa (freshman/Córdoba, Argentina) only played singles and also did not drop a game during her 6-0, 6-0 victory over Morgan to close out the 9-0 match for the Argonauts.

The Argonauts have a tough schedule ahead, facing defending national champions and top ranked Armstrong-Atlantic (3-0) this Saturday, February 14th. The Argonauts will face the Pirates at a neutral site in Tifton, Ga. at 10:00 a.m. ET.  For information on all UWF Athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
