No. 6 UWF Blanks NAIA No. 4 Berry 9-0

PENSACOLA, Fla. – In a clash against NAIA and NCAA II powerhouses, the No. 6 West Florida women’s tennis team (9-2, 2-1 GSC) earned another victory this season. The Argonauts blanked 9-0 No. 4 Berry (Ga.) (6-1) on Wednesday, March 18 at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Complex. The Argonauts earned their ninth win of the 2009 season, as the hosts did not drop a single match against the Vikings.

West Florida started the doubles action strong by winning in all three spots. In the first spot, No. 24 Suzana Cavalcante (senior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Paulina Ojeda (sophomore/Santiago, Chile) did not have trouble to beat 8-4 Stephanie Herz and Anja Chan. Argonauts second duo formed by Caitlyn Baines (freshman/Panama City Beach, Fla.) and Cammie Gray (freshman/Shalimar, Fla.) had tough time to defeat 8-6 Kirstin Ruffner and Kendall Ruffner. Argonauts No. 12 Renata Mattos (senior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Taylor Brewster (sophomore/Ontario, Canada) were pushed into a very intense match to defeat 9-7 Marina Lebrao and Barbara Tomai, giving the Argonauts the 3-0 lead.

In singles West Florida dominated the Lady eagles, as the hosts won all six matches in straight sets. Gray did not drop a game on her 6-0, 6-0 win over Laura Cunningham in the sixth spot, to remain undefeated with a 7-0 singles record so far in the season. Baines cruised on her 6-2, 6-2 win over Chan in the fifth spot, to give the Argonauts their fifth point and to secure the team victory over the Vikings. Mattos defeated 6-4, 6-1 Tomai from Berry in the third spot. In the second singles No. 15 Ojeda beat 6-4, 6-2 Kendall Ruffner. No 2 Cavalcante defeated 7-5, 6-1 Lebrao, the first player from the Vikings squad. The ninth and final Argonaut point was earned by Brewster. The fourth Argo singles player defeated Tomai in a well fought 7-6, 7-5 match up, to give the Argonauts the 9-0 win over the Vikings.

With the victory, the Argonauts jumped to a 9-2 overall record, while the Vikings dropped to a 6-1. West Florida will next play No. 16 Northeastern State (12-0) on Thursday at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Complex in Pensacola at 9:00 am. For information on all UWF Athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
