No. 6 West Florida Blanks GSC rival Alabama Huntsville 5-0
Saturday, 03/21/2009

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 6 West Florida women’s tennis team (7-1, 2-0 GSC) blanked 5-0 another GSC rival. A few hours after suffering its first loss of the season earlier this Saturday, March 14, the Argonauts returned to action against Alabama-Huntsville (2-5, 1-3 GSC). The Argonauts bounced back by quickly pulling a easy win over the Lady Chargers, as the Argonauts won in two spots by default due to an incomplete lineup.

Due to an injury, the Lady Chargers had to default on the #3 doubles, giving No. 24 Suzana Cavalcante (senior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Paulina Ojeda (sophomore/Santiago, Chile) the win. In the second spot, Yana Bokareva (sophomore/Moscow, Russia) and Naomi Higa (freshman/Cordoba, Argentina) did not drop a game in the 8-0 victory over Emily Taylor and Heather Gargis. No. 12 Renata Mattos (senior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Taylor Brewster (sophomore/Ontario, Canada) teamed back to defeat the Lady Chargers first duo by a 8-1 score. After doubles, the Argonauts had a 3-0 lead.

Entering the singles action, the Lady Chargers also defaulted at the sixth spot due to their sixth player’s injury. The Argonauts only needed to play one singles match to earn its fifth and final point. Caitlyn Baines (freshman/Panama City Beach, Fla.) cruised over Amanda Sippel in the fourth spot by dropping a single game in the whole match. With the 6-0, 6-1, Baines gave the Argonauts its seventh win on the season, the second over a GSC opponent. Due to a tight schedule, the other four singles matches were not played.

The Argos posted a 7-1 record, while the Lady Chargers dropped to a 2-5 record. West Florida will next play also GSC rival No. 3 Valdosta State this Saturday, March 15 in their home courts at 9:00 am. For information on all UWF Athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
