No. 6 West Florida Edges Delta State 5-4

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 6 West Florida women’s tennis team (14-3, 4-1 GSC) defeated Delta State 5-4 on Sunday, March 29 at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Complex. The doubles action was crucial for the West Florida victory, as the Argonauts earned a one-point advantage and went on to split the singles with the Lady Statesmen.

Playing in the first spot, Argonauts No. 24 Suzana Cavalcante (senior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Paulina Ojeda (sophomore/Santiago, Chile) only dropped a game in their 8-1 win over Cecile Benzaki and Tatiana Bouchaud. In the second spot, Caitlyn Baines (freshman/Panama City Beach, Fla.) and Cammie Gray defeated Krystlie Ozols and Lisa Jamais with an 8-5 score. Argonauts No. 12 Renata Mattos (senior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Taylor Brewster (sophomore/Ontario, Canada) fell 8-6 to Katharina Nett and Milena Araujo, giving the 2-1 lead to the Argos entering the singles action.

The singles action was very even, as both teams earned three wins each. No. 2 Cavalcante picked up a quick 6-1, 6-1 win over Nett in the first singles spot. Baines did not have trouble to beat Araujo 6-2, 6-1 in the fourth singles. Naomi Higa (freshman/Cordoba, Argentina) played in the sixth singles spot and easily defeated Bouchaud with a 6-1, 6-1 score to giving West Florida its fifth team point to secure the victory over Delta State. The Lady Statesmen responded by winning the remaining three matches on court. Gray played in the fifth spot and fell 6-2, 7-5 to Ozols. No.15 Ojeda fell in the second singles to Benzaki in a 6-2, 6-4 match. The Lady Statesmen earned their fourth point when Jamais beat Argo Bokareva with a 6-4, 6-4 score in the third singles.

With the 5-4 win, the Argonauts earned their fourteenth victory of the 2009 season to post a 14-3 record so far. West Florida will now face tough competition at the Blue Gray Championships, hosted by Alabama University-Montgomery. The championships will be held in Montgomery from April 2-4.
