Thursday, 03/05/2009

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The No. 6 West Florida women’s tennis team (4-0, 3-0 GSC) stayed perfect with a 5-0 win over Henderson State (2-3, 2-1 GSC) on Sunday in Arkadelphia.  West Florida blanked Henderson at the indoor courts of the Heflin Tennis Center, as the Lady Reddies defaulted in two spots due to a shortened roster.

In the doubles play, the No. 24 doubles team of Suzana Cavalcante (senior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Paulina Ojeda (sophomore/Santiago, Chile) defeated Meredith Massey and Rebecca Staton 8-0. In the second doubles spot, Taylor Brewster (sophomore/Ontaro, Canada) teamed with Cammie Gray (freshman/Shalimar, Fla.) to defeat Stephanie Schnobel and Estephanie Lau 8-1. Due to an injury, the Lady Reddies had to default on the #3 doubles, giving Renata Mattos (senior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Yana Bokareva (sophomore/Moscow, Russia) the win. After the doubles matches, the Argonauts had the 3-0 lead.

In singles, the Argonauts once again earned a free point when the Lady Reddies defaulted in the #6 spot. To earn the Argonauts fifth and final point, Mattos did not drop a game, defeating Anna Lobnitz 6-0, 6-0.

West Florida will next take on NAIA 23rd ranked Cumberland (Tenn.) (3-3) this Thursday, March 5 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.  For information on all UWF Athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
